ABKJ utilizes Revit and Civil3D for its structural and civil 3D building information modeling. Our BIM services have allowed us to help shorten design and schedule times by reducing potential discipline and construction design conflicts. It is also serves as an optimum tool for fast-track schedules to deliver projects to market early.

Design-Build Collaboration

ABKJ participates in private and public design-build transportation and building projects since the trend began in the early 1990s. We are committed to being an active member on all design team collaborations, helping develop innovative and practical solutions for budget-driven and schedule-driven projects led by contractors and developers.

ABKJ is the engineer-of-record on one of the first two design-build projects awarded by the State of Washington: The Natural Resources Building in Olympia, Washington.

Fast-Track Design

ABKJ is an industry leader in fast-track design and phased construction document delivery for projects with short construction windows. Fast-track design involves structural solutions for immediate assembly and erection by producing construction documents for portions of a project instead of delivering final documents all at once.

The great advantage for implementing fast-track approaches is it permits long lead items to be on order while the design or the construction elements are being completed. This greatly accelerates the construction schedule, often resulting in increased returns on investment.

With our experience working on Alaskan and international projects, ABKJ has pioneered prefabricated steel and RCC precast systems. These solutions are easily transported and assembled to meet accelerated construction schedules and produce phased drawings sets with construction sequencing in place to meet client goals for commencing operations.

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)

IPD is a team commitment to save time and money and increase sustainability. At the beginning of the project, the owner and design team create an entity that equally shares profit and loss. This agreement engages the team to work together, as a group of stakeholders, throughout the design process, so everyone shares in the project’s success. ABKJ was part of the design team for the Children’s Hospital Ambulatory Care Center in Bellevue, Washington, one of the first projects completed under an IPD contract.

Prefabrication and Precast Design

Producing building components in a controlled, off-site plant has many advantages. It reduces labor costs and helps with fast-track design by enabling an accelerated speed in construction. ABKJ has pioneered the use of prefabricated and precast design, most notably in remote areas of Alaska, to shorten construction schedules and provide clean, safe project sites.

Seismic Design

ABKJ has been designing in severe earthquake zones for more than fifty years. ABKJ has designed most of the major buildings in Anchorage, Alaska, and in most major cities along the west coast of the United States, which are in the critical earthquake zones along the Pacific Rim.

Principals of ABKJ were the engineers of record for several Alaskan buildings that withstood the 1964 earthquake, the most severe North American earthquake of the past 100 years. Our seismic upgrade method for the Fairmont Olympic Hotel renovation allowed full capacity utilization of the existing structure, which saved the client $4 million dollars and months of construction time.

ABKJ designed the first deep column SidePlate medical facility application in the United States on the Sharp Hospital Modernization in San Diego, California. ABKJ used the same innovation to the Overlake Hospital South Tower project in Bellevue, Washington and Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington.

Top-Down Construction

This 1.5 million sf office and retail complex is the largest top-down construction project ever performed in Bangalore, India. It includes 12 above-ground levels and 3 below-grade parking levels. ABKJ was awarded the project after performing a peer review and value engineering services that provided the owner more than 20% in structural savings.

Project Innovations
This is the largest top-down construction project ever performed in India using:
-Diaphragm walls and piles for basement columns and retaining walls
-Conventional flat slab with drop panels for basement
-Post-tensioned flat slab with drop panel for office floors
-Sinking-well method is adopted on STP
-The ABKJ design included speed ramps in the garage for improved parking access and flow
-Implementation of Steel Composite Structure on 11th and terrace floor
