Alaska - Overview

With its remote locations, winter temperatures, and proximity to the Pacific Ring of Fire high seismic region, Alaska has long presented design challenges for architects and engineers. ABKJ has been a leader in meeting these challenges with more than 1,000 projects in Alaska over the past 50 years, including designing more than 70% of the majestic Anchorage skyline.

ABKJ founding principals were the engineers of record for several Alaskan buildings that withstood the 1964 earthquake, the most severe North American earthquake of the past 100 years. ABKJ also surveyed and analyzed damage after major earthquakes.

From hospitals to museums to sports arenas to remote oil drilling camps, ABKJ has left its thumbprint all across Alaska, enabling the firm to become the premier seismic and fast-track engineering expert for challenging arctic conditions.
Alaska - Overview

Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage, Alaska

This 26,000 sf museum is located on a 26-acre parcel in Northeast Anchorage. It includes exhibit and demonstration areas, a theater, cafe, gift shop, a large open circular hall for gatherings and performances, and a rural travel information kiosk.

Alaska Native Medical Center, Anchorage, Alaska

This 347,000 sf is the largest brick building in Alaska and houses a major outpatient clinic, day surgery area, and a Center for Disease Control laboratory. The ABKJ design utilizes steel moment frames and steel bracing to provide the necessary seismic load capacities.

Alyeska Prince Resort, Girdwood, Alaska

This 10-story concrete tower has 307 rooms and suites. ABKJ’s structural design also included new upper and lower tram terminals for a 60 passenger aerial tram system, plus tram tower snow deflector walls. The lateral force resisting system design is provided by a combination of chevron steel bracing and special moment-resisting space frames.

Anchorage Airport FAA Tower, Anchorage, Alaska

This 169’ structure was designed for high seismic lateral forces and wind speeds to 150 mph. Constructed of precast concrete with a structural steel framed internal tower.

ARCO Operations Center Housing, Prudhoe Bay, Alaska

ABKJ designed modular living quarters and a recreation center for this remote site. The modules were prefabricated in Seattle and barged to Alaska, which still saved the owner 30% in construction costs.

British Petroleum Offices, Anchorage, Alaska

This project consists of a high-rise and low-rise building connected by an atrium over a common 1-story parking structure. The high-rise structure is 15 stories high, including 13 stories of offices and 2 stories on top for mechanical equipment. The low-rise structure is 3 stories high, with 2 stories of offices and 1 story on top for mechanical equipment.

Conoco-Phillips Office Tower, Anchorage, Alaska

This vertical expansion project converted a 2-story structure into a 22-story, 440,000 sf high-rise office tower in two phases. The framing above the ground floor is structural steel with the lateral loads resisted by six ductile moment-resisting frames, four exterior frames around the perimeter, and two diagonal interior frames.

Egan Convention Center, Anchorage, Alaska

This 98,000 sf convention center includes a 22,000 sf exhibition hall and 22 rooms with movable configurations. ABKJ also designed the pedestrian skybridge that connects the center to the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Hotel Captain Cook, Anchorage, Alaska

This 450-room luxury hotel was designed on a fast-track schedule. It consists of a 15-story, 109,000 sf tower and an 18-story, 145,000 sf tower. Precast floor slabs were placed after the steel framing for each floor was erected, providing a working platform and storage space for future non-structural items. This procedure allowed construction to continue year-round, rather than experiencing standard winter shutdown.

Peterson Tower

This 10-story, 235,000 sf mixed-use structure includes 7 floors of office space and 3 floors of condominiums, all supported by a 2-story parking garage and concrete mat foundation. Due to the proximity of the building to the 1964 earthquake slide area, extensive computer modeling of several foundation schemes were established to minimize future differential settlement problems.

Providence Hospital Expansion, Anchorage, Alaska

ABKJ provided new structural, remodel, and seismic upgrade design services as part of the Project '90s Expansion. ABKJ also designed two new parking garages, a medical office building, and a linear accelerator addition. ABKJ also conducted a campus structural analysis to upgrade all buildings to current seismic codes.

Robert B. Atwood Building, Anchorage, Alaska

This 20-story, 330,000 sf commercial office building features a below-grade parking structure under the plaza area. The building includes retail and restaurant areas and was designed to accommodate six stories of future expansion.

Sheraton Calista, Anchorage, Alaska

This 17-story, 287,000 sf L-shaped structure was framed in structural steel to allow construction through the winter months. An innovation developed for this project was the on-site precasting of end-wall stair towers as story-high boxes. After erection, the boxes were post-tensioned full height from the top.

Sullivan Sports Arena, Anchorage, Alaska

This 140,000 sf building is the premier sports arena and convention center space in Anchorage, Alaska, with space for more than 8,000 spectators. It includes an Olympic-size ice rink and an insulated floor covering for basketball, concerts, and trade shows. The ABKJ design utilized structural steel trusses with clear spans to 180 feet.

University of Alaska-Anchorage Garage, Anchorage, Alaska

This 4-story garage provides 124,000 sf of parking near the university’s Consortium Library. It includes two steel pedestrian bridges (108' and 65' long) connecting to the adjacent Science and College of Arts and Sciences buildings.
