RISK ASSESSMENTS / BUILDING UPGRADES

Automotive Assembly Plant Risk Assessment Study

ABKJ performed tornado risk assessment studies for 46 buildings in two states and developed concepts and cost estimates for structural upgrades. The final report and presentation to the owner included four complete building designs using building information modeling (BIM).

Camlin Hotel, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ completed a dynamic analysis on this late 1920s, 12-story structure and provided structural design documents for the seismic upgrade of the concrete-framed building to meet UBC code requirements. The existing building also received a 3-story, 15,000 sf addition.

Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ evaluated this historic hotel, built in the 1920s, for seismic resistance and updated it to current Seattle code requirements. ABKJ’s “dry system” solution maintained the hotel’s structural integrity and historical aesthetic appearance by avoiding exposed brick anchors and saved the owner $4 million and months of construction time.

Occidental Mall Upgrade, Seattle, Washington

This project consisted of rehabilitating two adjacent turn-of-the-century buildings located in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Both 4-story buildings were constructed of masonry brick in Romanesque Revival style. The ABKJ design upgraded them to current code requirements for seismic forces by adding steel moment frames.

Pacific Medical Center, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ provided structural design services for a 1995 buttress addition and a 2001 seismic upgrade to this building that is on the National Historical Register. The ABKJ upgrade design utilized 70,000 sf of M-brace carbon fiber strengthening, one of the largest such projects on the West coast.

St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington

ABKJ provided seismic upgrade design services for this 14-story, concrete shear wall building to ensure the structural system achieved immediate occupancy performance per FEMA 356. ABKJ utilized passive energy friction dampers, which eliminated costly foundation work and saved the owner $1 million compared to a conventional seismic upgrade.
