4th Avenue South Bridge, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ provided structural engineering services for this concrete bridge retrofit project that included a conceptual alternatives study, optimization study, post-retrofit analysis, load rating, and PS&E. The bridge is 1,690’ long and 94’ wide, consisting of eleven seismically separated bridge units. The project is BRAC funded and was designed to AASHTO code and the WSDOT Bridge Design Manual.

15th Avenue NE Bridge, Seattle, Washington

This 472’ concrete bridge is on a major urban arterial and bus corridor that spans the deep ravine of Thornton Creek near Northgate Mall. This bridge had deteriorated due to age and increased traffic volumes. ABKJ provided structural design and project management services to strengthen the structure, replace the expansion joints, repair concrete cracks and spalls, increase pedestrian railing heights, and correct erosion problems.

Duvall Bridge Upgrade, King County, Washington

This 1,182’ bridge carries more than 18,000 vehicles per day across the Snoqualmie River. ABKJ upgraded the 12 reinforced concrete box girders spans to improve the bridge capacity to current legal loads, extend the useful life of the bridge, and improve the bridge railing safety. ABKJ also assisted with public outreach materials and presentations to the City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and local residents.

East Duwamish Waterway Bridge, Seattle, Wasington

This 485’ bridge is a major throughway for West Seattle, Harbor Island, and the Port of Seattle’s Terminals 5 and 18
ABKJ rehabilitation design replaced the asphalt surface with a concrete slab, replaced the expansion joints, and repaired potholes and cracks in the concrete to create a safer and more durable bridge to serve today’s traffic.

I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Seismic Retrofit, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ performed the seismic vulnerability study and retrofit design of this 4,440' double-deck bridge that is the major North-South artery on I-5 through Seattle. Phase I consisted of strengthening critical elements in the steel truss spans. Phase II consisted of retrofitting the north and south approaches.

Magnolia Bridge Repair, Seattle, Washington

ABKJ completed an inspection and emergency repair design for this 3,000’ structure following the Nisqually earthquake.
The bridge was significantly damaged mostly on the transverse bracing members near the western end. There were also numerous cracks and spalls on concrete surfaces of the substructure in the columns and crossbeams. The design was completed in 3 weeks and the bridge was opened to traffic in just 15 weeks, almost 7 weeks ahead of schedule.

Meadowbrook Bridge, King County, Washington

ABKJ rehabilitated this historic landmark steel truss structure, including replacing the concrete deck with an exodermic deck system. Other design elements included rehabilitating the steel trusses and the cantilever sidewalks supported by truss bracketing, replacing the traffic railing, and replacing the truss bearings with elastomeric isolation bearings.

Wynaco Bridge, King County, Washington

ABKJ rehabilitated this 195’ concrete girder bridge by strengthening the crossbeams, repairing the existing girders, and replacing the deck and bridge rail system. This ABKJ design removed the existing load posting and retrofitted the bridge to current seismic standards. ABKJ also provided construction administration services.
